Add sales tax to a price, extract tax from an inclusive total, combine multiple rates, or reverse-calculate a subtotal from a known tax amount. Enter the rate yourself; no location-specific rate is assumed.
For a pre-tax price, multiply the taxable subtotal by the rate divided by 100, then add the tax. Quantity and an optional discount are applied before tax.
When tax is already included, divide the total by one plus the decimal rate. Multiplying the inclusive total directly by the rate would overstate the included tax.
tax = taxable subtotal × (rate ÷ 100); total = taxable subtotal + taxpre-tax subtotal = inclusive total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); included tax = total − pre-tax subtotalpre-tax subtotal = known tax ÷ (rate ÷ 100)combined rate = r₁ + r₂ + …total factor = (1 + r₁) × (1 + r₂) × …base subtotal = unit price × quantity; taxable subtotal = base subtotal − discounttotal per person = final total ÷ people$100 at 8% produces $8 tax and a $108 final total.
A $108 tax-inclusive total at 8% contains a $100 pre-tax subtotal and $8 tax.
$250 at 8.25% produces exactly $20.625 tax and $270.625 total, displayed as $20.63 and $270.63.
Additive rates of 5%, 2%, and 1% on $100 produce $8 total tax and $108 final.
Sequential taxes of 5% then 10% on $100 produce $5 then $10.50 tax, for $115.50 total and a 15.5% effective rate.
A 20% discount on $100 leaves $80 taxable; 10% tax is $8 and the final total is $88.
CalcRocket does not determine a rate from a ZIP code, state, country, item, or customer.
Tax treatment of discounts can vary. Use the taxable amount shown on your receipt or invoice when accuracy matters.
Optional payer rounding is shown as an adjustment and is never described as tax.
Enter a pre-tax unit price and rate. Quantity, discounts, splitting, and rounding are optional.
Included-tax mode divides by the tax factor to recover the price before tax.
Additive mode applies every enabled rate to the same subtotal. Compound mode applies each enabled tax to the running total and shows every stage.
The calculator applies fixed or percentage discounts before tax as an arithmetic convention. Legal treatment varies.
